3. It’s All About the Base and the Top Coat

I know you thought it was manicure 101 to never skip the base coat, but guess what? You were wrong. By putting a base coat directly on nude nails, the chemicals in acetates can eventually eat away at the plate, making it weaker and more likely to break. Solution: The first step in your manicure process should be applying a small amount of hand lotion to your nails before polishing. The lotion acts as a primer, filling in the tiny gaps in the nails while hydrating them so they’re not at risk of damage from the base coat and polish. Wait for the moisturizer to dry, wipe away any excess, and polish as usual. The top coat can help hold moisture in the nail and help discourage overdrying of the nail when you wash your hands.
